This editorial was something I struggled with. I wasn't entirely sure about what I was supposed to include in the writing and I lacked statistics and evidence. I think I had a good idea and background but my editorial skimmed the top of the surface and didn't really dig deep into the topic enough. This did however provide interest for me and motivated me to research in depth my topic for the final research paper and presentation. This topic was really interesting and this was a good start for the presentation as a whole.
Societies View of Beauty
Turn on the TV, walk around the mall and you’ll see advertisements with beautiful people. For the males, you’ll often see tan, well curved and slim bodies of absolutely gorgeous girls in fashionable clothing, most often revealing ones like bikinis. And for the women, you’ll see that muscular, defined and ripped male with no shirt flexing his 8-pack and huge biceps. But is this the only type of beauty?
While seeing how beauty has changed over time, I saw this picture with Marilyn Monroe in a nightgown and several slim models in bikini’s captioned “Since when has this (referring to the models) become more beautiful than this (Marilyn Monroe)?” It’s really interesting to see how beauty has evolved over time. From Hawaiian History, we learned that the bigger the women, meaning the more she weighed, the more beautiful she was. So how does society judge who is beautiful and who is not? And who ultimately decides when it changes?
For example, if you asked a boy or girl, what they thought was attractive in the opposite gender they would typically bring up the same qualities. Now days, the bodies of a person are nearly just important as the face of he or she as well. At ‘Iolani, girls will spend the nights prior to class day, doing sit ups and working out so that they look good in bathing suits. And for guys, we will desperately wake up at 5am on the morning of class day to lift weights so that we can look huge in our tank tops. Sadly, this is what society has become to. We are influenced by what we see, and often only see the most attractive people, leaving us to believe that this is what we have to become.
What has contributed to the change of beauty? I believe it has to do with advancements. Tools that didn’t exist generations ago help impact people today. In addition, things change over time and influences alter how people think and act. For example, Make up: Both males and females use make up to cover up and promote their facial beauty. Secondly, Operations and Implants: Women often get breast or butt implants to look curvier. It is very common for both genders to go through Botox operations. In addition, women can get fake tans as well as change their hair color if desired. As for men, they will sometimes get penis implants as well. Lastly, technology has helped contribute to various comparisons of what is beautiful. Advertising is huge on the way people in society view beauty. When people see skinny and curvy women, they want to be just like them. And when men see the ripped and defined male, they want to become just like them. Everyone wants to be viewed as attractive and so it becomes the norm of society. There are ways to edit pictures on the computer to make people look more attractive. Doctors have the technology to conduct studies to help find people the perfect diets and nutrition. Workouts can be created to be spread to those who are looking to become fit. New ideas and their reviews, as well as recommendations can be spread and advertised on televisions, radios and the internet.
